What we offer

The School Governance service in Telford and Wrekin has an established reputation for providing quality support and guidance to schools and academies and their governing bodies.  As part of the School Improvement service, the School Governance team works closely with head teachers and governing bodies to ensure they meet their statutory duties and strengthen their leadership and management roles.

Our services include:

  • A governor helpline which offers free advice including constitutional and statutory aspects of school governance. The help line is available Monday-Friday and we aim to respond within two working days within term time.
  • A wide variety of centrally delivered governor training courses and bespoke packages.
  • A high quality clerking service which includes the calling of governing body meetings, production of minutes and provision of advice and guidance on the conduct of meetings and other governance matters.  This includes maintaining a register of governors' attendance at meetings and managing the process of governor appointments and resignations.  To ensure the service is as effective as possible we provide:
    • Termly training for clerks to develop their skills
    • Termly briefing for clerks
    • Current termly agenda and any national and local initiatives
    • Detailed briefing papers to guide and inform discussion at meetings
    • Quality assurance of processes and procedures
    • A coherent and aligned support package to respond to queries raised at meetings.
  • Support can also be provided in areas such as:
    • Interpretation of government legislation and supporting its implementation through advice and the production of guidance
    • The offer of one to one support to new head teachers on governance matters
    • A termly heads and chair briefing session, induction training for new governors and bespoke training for individual governing bodies
    • Guidance with aspects of the appointment of the head.

Further information and a full programme of Governor training courses can be found at:

Why choose us?

We provide:

  • Regular quality assured processes which indicate very high levels of satisfaction with the quality of clerking service, governor training courses and termly briefings sessions for headteachers and chairs of governing bodies.
  • Bespoke training sessions with governors and senior leaders which are consistently evaluated as good and outstanding.

Customer feedback

Between January and September 2014 the School Governance team delivered a wide variety of centrally delivered Governor training courses and bespoke packages to both Telford and Wrekin schools and out of borough settings.  Of the number of evaluation forms received, 97% of delegates rated the courses and bespoke training as good or excellent.

'We can't speak too highly of the tremendous level of support governors and staff received from the School Improvement Team at Telford.  We were reassured that the Team, led by Service Delivery Manager Sally Noble, clearly knew their stuff: They gave practical advice and straight forward assistance, which enabled us to move from a Requires Improvement school to a Good school with outstanding features at our latest OFSTED in October 2014. Given the rate of progress seen, we'd also say it was money well spent; cost effective with evident outcomes.'

Pauline Heffernan, Chair of Governors St. Luke's RC Primary School, Telford.
